The Thatched Cottage

Old Westbury Gardens, New York

Scope

The Thatched Cottage at Westbury House, was completed in 1919 as a birthday gift for Margaret “Peggie” Phipps, daughter of Jay Phipps. The cottage is nestled into the garden landscape, and exhibits many traditional English building features, including half-timber framing, a fireplace, and a remarkable thatched roof.

In order to follow appropriate stewardship, Old Westbury Gardens enlisted JHPA, Inc. to conduct an existing conditions survey and complete a report for the cottage.

JHPA, Inc. provided the organization with a conditions assessment and recommendations report to identify the possible sources and levels of deterioration of the building exterior and interior. As a result, a program for future maintenance and repair interventions has been established, ensuring the longevity of this architectural gem.
