Old First Presbyterian Church

Huntington, New York

Scope

The third church of the same name to stand in the area, the original church, built in 1665, proved inadequate, even after an early expansion. The second church erected in its present location in 1715 was destroyed in1782 for use in construction of fortifications by British troops occupying Huntington. The current church was rebuilt in 1784. JHPA, Inc. completed a detailed conditions assessment and report of the heavily deteriorated steeple, with a focus on addressing chronic water infiltration issues that long plagued the Church. JHPArchitects PC followed the conditions assessment with full restoration documents for removal of later accretions and resetting the spire back to its original 1784 appearance, including restoration of the spire clock faces that were, interestingly, never fitted with a clock mechanism.

Today the restored spire is an historic landmark visible from virtually every point within the Town of Huntington.
