Old First Reformed Church
Brooklyn, New York
Scope
Old First Reformed Church was designed in the Neo-Gothic style by the renowned architect George L. Morse, and dedicated in 1891, with windows by the Tiffany studio among others. The site is a designated individual New York City landmark.
In 2011 a near-catastrophic failure of a large section of the coffered sanctuary plaster ceiling fell to the floor. JHPA, Inc. was enlisted to perform an assessment of the ceiling. JHPArchitects PC then provided restoration documents for a nearly $1M restoration effort at the sanctuary interior.
Following the successful completion of the sanctuary ceiling repair, JHPA was asked to provide an existing conditions assessment and report for the entire church complex, including stained glass windows – there had been numerous roof leaks and other building deficiencies that needed to be addressed.
Following the completion of the report, the church and JHPA methodically addressed and cured numerous problems that included:
Restoration of the pews in the sanctuary and re-orientation
Application of new sanctuary flooring
Repairs to numerous leaking roof areas
Wood window restoration
Upgrading of the electrical system
Restoration of the monumental original chandelier in the sanctuary
The church is now renewed and prepared to provide sanctuary and peace for several more generations.
