Hunt Memorial Building
Ellenville, New York
Scope
The Hunt Memorial Building was completed in 1917 as the headquarters for the Ellenville chapter of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. For decades the structure played a pivotal role in the center of downtown Ellenville, housing the WCTU, then later serving as the town Library. As the community of Ellenville began a slow financial decent in the 1970s, so did the Hunt Memorial, eventually housing a local appliance store and then becoming vacant.
The Hunt Memorial Preservation Committee, working with the Village of Ellenville, has made great strides to ensure that this landmark is not lost. The HMPC enlisted the services of JHPA, Inc. and JHPArchitects PC to prepare an existing conditions assessment report and restoration documents for the first phase of an exterior restoration of the building south façade. Work entailed selective masonry repair and repointing, decorative sheet metal restoration, replication of missing architectural elements, window restoration, and reconstruction of the south entry porticos.
The completed project stirred considerable local interest in the building’s revival and the HMPC worked with JHPArchitects PC on a subsequent phase - the restoration of the remaining historic windows.
