The Renee and Chiam Gross Museum
New York, New York
Scope
Following renovations completed in 1963, this 19th C building served as the residence and studio of famed mid-20th century artist and sculptor, Chaim Gross and his wife Renee. The site retains most of the original fabric from Chaim’s residency, making it a significant time capsule of period, style, design, and thought.
JHPA, Inc. was initially retained by the foundation to perform an investigation of water infiltration sources which were causing considerable damage to the interior finishes of the artist’s studio.
Subsequently, JHPArchitects PC completed restoration documents and provided project management for the restoration of the deteriorated rear skylight, and interior finishes of the studio, permitting the space to be interpreted to its 1963 appearance.
JHPArchitects PC has continued to assist the Gross Foundation with various projects, including the development of a full existing conditions assessment and report and fund-raising, and is currently completing documents for the restoration of the exterior building envelope.
