Scope
JHPA, Inc was engaged by Peter Pennoyer Architects to assist in the design of a full exterior renovation package for the penthouse apartment at this former loft building, a NYC individual Landmark built in 1895, featuring an ornate terra cotta and painted sheet metal façade. The crowning element of this edifice is the ‘Cupola,’ a 3-story corner tower sheathed in painted galvanized steel and pressed zinc ornament.
The complete interior build-out of the Cupola is extensive, requiring a high-degree of thermal performance and humidity control. Given this set of parameters and the deteriorated condition of the existing cladding, the client directed the team to design a complete recladding of the Cupola, incorporating new continuous waterproofing, comprehensive thermal insulation, and new structural armatures to support the restored cladding.
JHPA, Inc. prepared existing conditions surveys and reports, culminating in a full set of construction documents by PPA. The project, consisting of the complete disassembly of the existing Cupola and replication in painted copper to match the original appearance, was successfully bid and successfully completed. The design incorporated the work of several subconsultants and was closely coordinated with ongoing exterior and interior renovations.
