132 Charles Street

New York, New York

Scope

Constructed in the 1830s, the modest row house at 132 Charles Street was purchased by a couple who were enthusiastic about returning the house to its original appearance. The house had unfortunately received a monolithic stucco coating on the main facade in the 1940s that covered the original wooden clapboards and obscured much original detail.

JHPArchitects PC was enlisted to devise a plan to return the house to its former appearance. Unfortunately, the NYC fire codes did not permit replacement of the wooden exterior cladding, which had been damaged by the stucco system. JHPA worked with a manufacturer of cement board siding to replicate the original siding dimensions and appearance. Finishes research allowed the house to return to its original color, and original historic appearance.
