Moni Perivolis
Antissa, Lesvos, Greece
Scope
Located on the island of Lesvos in Greece, the Moni Perivolis Monastery was constructed in the 14th Century, and contains numerous magnificent, early, frescoes on the interior walls. The frescoes were being damaged by moisture conditions, the source of which could not be determined. The World Monuments Fund supported a team of conservators and architects to determine the source of the moisture, and devise a plan for eliminating the wet condition.
The team, with a group of historic preservation students, performed diagnostic testing of the building and determined the root cause of the damage. A small test intervention was completed with great success, giving the monastery a path to eliminate the deficient condition, and save the priceless murals.
