Wien Residence Gate
New York, New York
Scope
A university campus is an enormous collection of building elements, artifacts, and systems. Because buildings require the greatest amount of attention, at times the lesser details are overlooked. At Columbia University, the historic Wien Residence gate and fence, composed of highly articulated cast and wrought iron elements, had been under-maintained, and exhibited corrosion, oxide-jacking, and general paint failure, all of which had affected its operation.
Tasked with developing a remedial strategy that preserved historic material, JHPA, Inc. first completed an existing conditions survey. Once a repair methodology was established, JHPArchitects PC completed documents for restoration, solicited contractor bids, and provided construction administration, for the successful restoration of the remarkable campus element.
