Scope
The B.F. Goodrich building, at 1780 Broadway, dates to 1909 and is a one of the only survivors of that area’s ‘automobile row.’ It features a tall central limestone bay with a rhythmic assemblage of Kalamein windows flanked by brick bays, all above a terra cotta and granite base with cast iron storefront and side entries.
JHPArchitects PC was engaged by Extell Development Corporation to perform a conditions assessment and prepare to integrate it with a new internal structure and an adjacent mixed-use tower. The scope of services included a complete survey of the windows, storefronts and facade conditions, preparation of full construction documents for restoration, and construction administration in conjunction with the decade long planning and phased construction of the full site.
Aside from in-situ restoration of the main brick, limestone, and granite facade, new cast iron storefronts were fabricated to replicate original remnants found onsite, new marble entry surrounds, and new 2-story columns that had been removed were replicated in solid granite. New Kalamein windows were reproduced to match the originals and installed in over 60 openings.
