Bannerman’s Island, Fishkill, New York
Scope
The iconic ruins rising from the small Pollepel island in the Hudson River near Fishkill, NY have been a Hudson Valley landmark for decades. Both the Bannerman Arsenal and Crag Inch Lodge, the residence of Francis Bannerman, are outstanding examples of eclectic architecture and construction. Constructed between 1901 and 1918, the buildings are a mix of architectural details and construction techniques, and feature some unusual and interesting recycled elements such as gun muzzles, bayonets and bed frames used as structural components for the concrete “skin”.
JHPA, Inc/JHPArchitects PC has assisted the Bannerman Castle Trust over many years addressing a variety of preservation efforts on the island including completion of an Historic Structure Report of the residence, stabilization efforts at both the residence and the arsenal, and a hybrid alteration-stabilization project that permitted access into the interior of the residence, a tremendous asset to the organization.
In addition to our work with the Bannerman Castle Trust, JHPA also assisted the local artist Melissa McGill with the engineering and execution of her monumental sculptural installation “Constellation” on the Island. Each of the projects on the island has required creative planning and design on JHPA’s part to facilitate transport of materials and equipment across the Hudson river as well as around a challenging terrain on the island itself.
In addition to our design efforts, the JHPA team has also assisted the Bannerman Castle Trust with funding efforts.
