Rockefeller University Canopy Restoration

New York NY

Rockefeller University, founded in 1901 as the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, is one of the foremost facilities for medical research. Completed in 1907, the Hospital building plays a significant role in the day-to-day operations of the University.

JHPA worked with HOK on the restoration of the entrance canopy of the Hospital as part of an overall upgrade of the building. Representatives from JHPA prepared a detailed assessment of the original cast iron-canopy, including a detailed catalog of missing/damaged components. Accurate reproduction of key components such as the original textured wire glass that was largely missing were an essential part of the design process.

The canopy was disassembled, patterns for missing/damaged components were fabricated for the re-casting process, and finally the canopy was re-assembled on site. The fully restored canopy was officially unveiled for the centennial of the University in 2001.
