Wayside Cottage
Scarsdale, New York
Scope
Wayside Cottage is believed to have been constructed around 1715 by Edmund Tompkins. The Cottage served as an Inn and private residence beginning with the Varian family in 1761, until 1851 when it became part of the country Estate of James Butler. In 1917 the Cottage and surrounding land was given to the Town of Scarsdale as a community farm property. The Cottage has continued to serve as a community building to this date, housing the Woman’s Club and Jr. League of Scarsdale.
JHPArchitects PC began work on an extensive exterior restoration of the Cottage, the first since the Jr. League’s restoration of the Cottage in 1953. JHPArchitects PC worked closely with the Town of Scarsdale and the Jr. League of Central Westchester to develop a restoration plan that met the needs of the Jr. League and ensured the long-term preservation of the Cottage.
Restoration was based on an extensive Conditions Assessment and Recommendations Plan prepared by JHPA, Inc for the property and information gathered from the well documented 1953 restoration. Work at the Cottage included roofing replacement, structural repairs, cladding restoration/replacement, window restoration and door restoration.
