The Steinway Building
New York, New York
Scope
Located at 111 West 57th Street in Manhattan, the Steinway Building was completed in 1925 and is a designated New York City individual landmark. The building was designed to house the showrooms of the famed Steinway & Sons Piano Company. The building was purchased in 2014 by a real estate developer, with plans to integrate a new tower with the historic building. Because of its historic significance, care had to be taken during design and construction phases to ensure the historic fabric and significant features of the original building were retained.
JHPArchitects PC was engaged by the developer to prepare a Conditions Assessment and set of Construction Documents for the complete exterior restoration of the building and the interior showroom meeting standards set forth by the Landmarks Commission. Restoration work included limestone masonry repair and replication, masonry cleaning, copper roof replication, and window replacement. JHPArchitects PC coordinated with several consultants and the NYCLPC to ensure the new building design did not negatively impact the original building.
