The Tin Building
New York, New York
Scope
Constructed in 1907 on an East River site that has been occupied by fishmongers since 1835, the “Tin Building” was constructed in 1907, the fourth building on the site, replicating the Neoclassical design of a predecesor built in 1869. The structure is clad in corrugated sheet metal, ornamented with two-story tall panelled pilasters, also of sheet metal. The facades are surmounted by an ornate entablature and cornice, and the building is capped with three monumental pediments. The building sat fallow following the relocation of the Fulton Fish Market.
A revitalization effort at the Seaport resulted in the renovation and adaptive reuse of the building. The new design was created by SHoP Architects, and JHPArchitects were enlisted to assist with preservation designs to ensure that as much original material was appropriately salvaged and reused in the reconstructed building.
The revitalized Tin Building has become a center for commercial activity in the Seaport.
