Sing-Sing Prison Museum
Ossining, New York
Scope
Possibly the most notable prison in America, Sing-Sing Prison is a collection of buildings from many eras – the first constructed by inmates in 1824, of Ossining marble, which was quarried on-site. The shell of the original building still stands, and Friends of Sing-Sing Museum engaged the services of JHPA, Inc. to complete an exiting conditions assessment of the structure, and the nearby 20th C powerhouse, the eventual goal of which is to create a museum of incarceration.
Using mechanical lifts, the JHPA, Inc. team fully surveyed the building and developed measured drawings and a scope of work for stabilization for the eventual adaptive reuse of the building as part of the new museum of incarceration. The investigation shone a light on not only the buildings’ conditions, but revealed the stark conditions under which the inmates of the early prison lived.
As yet unrealized, once funding is fully established, the new museum will have all information necessary to move forward with the design of this remarkable artifact.
