Saint Mark’s Church-in-the-Bowery

New York, New York

Scope

Consecrated in 1799, Saint Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery was the first Episcopal parish independent of Trinity Church in New York City. Designed and constructed by master builder John McComb Jr, the church received a tower in 1828 designed by Ithiel Town. The church is a New York City individual landmark, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

For many decades a center for community arts, cultural growth and activism, the church has hosted numerous luminaries, including Kahlil Gibran, Amy Lowell, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Carl Sandburg, and Edward Steichen. It continues today as a beacon for arts organizations.

Plagued more recently with damage to the interior finishes of the sanctuary caused by water infiltration from the roof, the church mobilized, engaged JHPArchitects PC, and undertook a complete roof and roof drainage system restoration. Facing materials shortages as a result of the Covid pandemic, the restoration project was delayed numerous times, but came to successful fruition in the fall of 2023.
