Scope
The Knickerbocker Club, at 807 5th Avenue in Manhattan, is a fixture of the Upper East Side, distinguished by its size, aesthetics, and prominent location. In 2013, JHPA produced a comprehensive exterior conditions assessment report to guide future capital projects, which were phased to allow the work to proceed with minimal impact.
A phased restoration program first addressed significant masonry failure and structural issues on the rear façade of the building. Subsequent work included the in-kind replacement of the copper mansard roof, along with all concrete and structural steel framing, and restoration of the original cast iron projecting bay and monumental arched window. The final phase saw the complete disassembly and partial replacement of the marble cornice as well as replacement of the integral 4th floor concrete roof slab. Additional work included new supplemental structural framing at various locations, reconstruction of the terrace brick chimneys, offsite restoration of all ornamental metals, and full restoration of the remaining facades, including new 2nd floor balcony marble entablatures and brackets.
In an acknowledgement of the arduous and exacting restoration completed by the Club, the project received both a Lucy G. Moses Award, and a Preservation League of New York award for Excellence in Preservation.
