Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum

Bronx, New York

Scope

Owned by the same family since its construction in 1842, the Bartow-Pell mansion was purchased by the City of New York in 1888, and became part of Pelham Bay Park. The mansion opened as a museum in 1946 and is now administered by the Historic House Trust of NYC. The mansion once served as Fiorello laGuardia’s summer residence while he was the mayor of NYC.

The mansion had been plagued by deferred maintenance, and it was necessary to determine existing conditions in order to forge a path toward future preservation. JHPA, In.c was enlisted, with funding by the IMLS, to complete an existing conditions CAP survey and report. The completed report became a guide for immediate and future restorative interventions to ensure the longevity of this historically significant museum.
