Lednice & Valtice Castles

Southern Moravia, Czech Republic

The World Monuments Fund invited JHPA to participate on a multi-discipline, international team to analyze and prepare a study for two historic castles and twelve follies within a sprawling man-made landscape. The World Monuments Fund study was directed toward future economic development of the southern Moravia region as a destination for cultural tourism.

Valtice and Lednice — dating from the 17th and 19th centuries respectively — and their surroundings were originally created and owned by the Lichtenstein family and are currently owned by the Czech Republic.

JHPA’s responsibilities included evaluation of existing conditions, historic preservation and architectural conservation recommendations, adaptive reuse planning for both castles and several of the follies, and vehicular and pedestrian access route planning. As a result of the study, the property was selected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
