Church of the Intercession

Located at 155th Street and Broadway in Manhattan, the Church of the Intercession was designed by Cram, Ferguson & Goodhue and completed in 1914. A remarkable, picturesque complex of buildings in a loosely interpreted English Perpendicular Gothic, the Chapel and its site were designated as a New York City landmark in 1966.
Decades later, increasingly complex maintenance and repair problems indicated the need for a conditions study of the church. JHPA, with a team of electrical, mechanical, and stained glass consultants, prepared an illustrated conditions study with recommendations for remedial work, a phased scope of work, and cost estimate.
JHPA has since prepared construction documents for restoration of the main entry of the church, which was damaged by fire. The work included restoration of ornamental limestone, re-setting of granite steps, replacement of damaged bluestone, re-casting ornamental door hardware and replication of copper fixtures. The project was an important and visible first step in addressing the church’s long-term maintenance goals. The firm has also assisted the church in obtaining grants and completing roofing and drainage work.
